A masterclass on leadership by musician Jacob Collier

Being absolutely amazing at what you do is one important thing.
More important is how your actions speak for yourself. On his concert of July 3rd 2022, at young 27 years of age, musician Jacob Collier proved what to me was an absolute masterclass on leadership.

  • “Hard skills": He sang in the most open array of notes I've ever heard + played guitar(s), piano, keyboard, harmonizer, drums.. and a cello. Several of them during the same song.

  • Consent: He often asked if it was ok to move on with the process of the concert and the next song (duh, of course!).

  • Acknowledgement: He recognised his team mates not only by highlighting their professional (musical) capacities, but by highlighting their humanity. Each one blew my mind. He didn't only thank each band member individually, but also each off-stage team member, with name & surname.

  • Responsibility: He made clear ethical statements around the state of the world and gifted us a moment of mindfulness & full presence (without phones).

  • Inclusion: He included the "beneficiaries/clients" - aka. us, the audience - by making them participate actively in the whole process -aka. concert.

  • Communication: He communicated clearly, wholeheartedly and humbly.

  • Gratefulness: He reckoned how special it is to bring people together, and how we shouldn't take this for granted.

  • Bonus track: It was obvious that they were having tons fun at his work.

Inspiration does come from everywhere! Jacob knows how to create beautiful, real participation with an improvised audience choir... a real participation master.

The power & beauty of making people come together.

Here's a snippet on the "inclusion" part of his concert in Paris...
